June listened to the quiet, familiar creaks of the floorboards above her and felt the usual pang of worry. It was useless wishing she could help Luke because she knew full well there was nothing she could do to make the pain go away. After a few moments, curiosity wormed its way through her worry. From what Uncle Bill had learned about his parents, she wouldn’t have expected him to be so tall… and he was still growing. His mother, Celia, had been only five foot four, and Luke was already five inches taller than John.

With a shrug, June tried to turn her thoughts to something less distressing only to have Ben land front and center in her brain. Again. Admittedly, her irritation with him had faded noticeably—and surprisingly—since he’d defended Luke this afternoon. He was right about Jake’s taunts and right to stand up for Luke when she had been too angry to see the truth. She should have done something about Jake a long time ago, should never have let it come to the point that Luke finally had enough and dealt with it himself. Guilt prickled her, and she let her head hang. Luke was sorry for getting into a fight with Jake? She hugged herself tightly and knew without a doubt that she owed him an apology, not the other way around.

She hadn’t seen what started the fight, but she had seen Jake punch Luke first in the cheek and then in the stomach. The others on the hay crew had dropped what they were doing and raced over, but as soon as it became clear that Luke could handle himself, they’d stood back and let him have it out until Jake stopped fighting back. Then Ben and Pat had dragged him off, and June was grateful. The last thing Luke needed was an assault charge. She could imagine what thoughts had run through his mind when he realized what he’d done and hoped he hadn’t been too hard on himself.

Ben had fervently backed Luke when she had been too blinded by her anger to realize the fight was much more her fault than Luke’s, and she appreciated it more than she would have imagined. Of course, it also made her wish he’d make up his mind. If he didn’t want to be anything more than friends, she’d much prefer to know before her heart—and the rest of her—became any more entangled in this mess.

She was still leaning against the counter, reviewing the day and every day since Ben had first kissed her, when the man in question stepped through the door from the utility room with a dark blue towel wrapped around his waist and drops of water glittering… everywhere. The word beautiful floated through her mind. Masculine, graceful, and beautiful. He braced his forearms against the doorframe and leaned forward a little. When he caught her staring, he smiled, and her heart raced. It was amazing to see his smile fully ignite his gray eyes again, even though she knew he was probably ready to drop into bed.
